An Interview with a Wild Mama: Reflections on Her Family Photography Session
Every session I photograph holds a special place in my heart, but this one truly stood out. It reminded me why I do what I do: capturing authentic, emotional family moments that last a lifetime.
I recently sat down with Lucy to hear about her family photography session. From her thoughts on the shoot to what motherhood means to her, and how her family enjoys spending time together, her answers are full of warmth, joy, and heartfelt connection.
Why she chose a wild family motherhood photoshoot
Q: What made you decide to take part in a motherhood photoshoot?
"I love Heather’s natural, family photography. It was perfect for our family, who are always on the move with our little wildlings! Posed photos have always felt awkward to us, which is why we never had maternity or newborn pictures when our girls were younger. I wish I had known Heather sooner — capturing these moments has been such a beautifully emotional experience for me."
A gentle, family-led experience
Q: What was your experience of the shoot, and what did you take away from it?
"From start to finish, I felt completely safe and comfortable — something I don’t usually experience during photoshoots. The girls were excited, especially to wear the outfits Heather styled for us, which made things much less stressful.
The session felt like a joyful gathering with a friend: playful, relaxed, and full of laughter. My girls could simply be themselves — splashing, climbing, and exploring — while Heather captured the moments authentically.
As a mother, the session was healing. Looking at the photos reminded me that I’m doing an okay job, and the connection between me and my girls shone through beautifully. In the whirlwind of parenting, it’s easy to forget to pause and capture the everyday magic. This session summed it all up for me, showing me what motherhood truly is and the unique journey we are on."
The magic of being outdoors
Q: What does being in nature and outdoors mean to you and your family?
"Nature is everything to us. We go outside every day, rain or shine. Being outdoors calms us, inspires us, and resets our energy. Swimming in our favourite river, climbing rocks, sliding down muddy hills, exploring forests — these moments are all we need to recharge and connect."
Favourite Family Adventure Memories
Q: Do you have a favourite memory as a family outdoors?
"One evening at the beach, we stayed until the stars came out. The girls ran along the shore, searching for sea glass, playing in the water, and eagerly awaiting the first star. We wrapped up warm as the sun set and enjoyed hot chips on the walk back to the car. Walking barefoot in the sand became a small but treasured memory of that adventure."
Everyday Joy: What They Love Doing Together
Q: What do you love doing as a family?
"It sounds simple, but just being outside together is everything. Whether exploring forests, local parks, or riding scooters and bikes with a picnic, being present together makes for our happiest moments."
Reflections on Motherhood
Q: What does motherhood mean to you?
"Motherhood is the purest love. It’s growing alongside your children and discovering your truest self. Since having my girls, I’ve changed more than ever in my life. They’ve shown me what’s important, and raising them feels like my life’s calling. It’s not just the big milestones, but the thousands of fleeting, tiny moments that pass so quickly — these are the moments I cherish most."
